The Mill Conference Center at Mississippi State University

August 5, 2019

A cotton mill opened in Starkville in 1902, it was a source of pride for the entire community. Today, as The Mill Conference Center, the space provides a grand venue for business and social events, and sits right next door to the conference center hotel, the Courtyard by Marriott. The Mill Conference Center is listed on the National Registry of Historical Places and is the only mill open to the public in the southeast. The revitalized mill will be the fabric of change to bring more visitors from throughout the state and southeast region to Starkville. Mississippi is honored in the hand-selected original artwork, the regional names bestowed on the meeting rooms, and saving the crown jewel for the ballroom, The Mississippian. (Source:

Recently installed at the facility is a Thermo-Koolactual size 25’5” x 9’1” x 7’6” high walk-in cooler/ freezer combination. Thermo-Kool’s uncompromising commitment to the highest level of quality and excellent customer service make a perfect fit for the historical facility. Thermo-Kool’s high-density DURATHANE panel perimeter allowed the Thermo-Kool walk-in to be preassembled prior to shipment for a thorough quality control inspection to avoid “hidden costs” at the time of installation. With Thermo-Kool’s ability to manufacture in 1” panel increments the walk-in was manufactured in the actual size and configuration needed to maximize storage space capabilities with no “cutting and pasting” required in the field! The custom design, as shown in the layout inset in the picture above, included an offset behind the freezer compartment and a special corner door frame in the cooler compartment to fit the exact job site space available. The white stucco galvanized provided on the interior of each compartment of the walk-in along with the fluorescent light fixtures ensure maximum illumination is provided. The walk-in freezer is designed with a Thermo-Kool 1/8” aluminum tread- plate floor which has a foamed-in-place interior ramp with an NSF approved cove as an integral part of the floor design. The cooler compartment is floorless with vinyl u-channel screeds which demonstrate Thermo-Kool’s unique design capability in providing a step-down partition. Each walk-in compartment also includes Thermo-Kool’s TK4700 Walk-In Monitor System which features multi-compartment temperature monitoring, high and low temperature alarm, door status monitoring, automatic lighting control, compartment identification, door/door frame/peep window heater control, motion detectors, door open alarm and a panic alarm.

Thermo-Kool Customer Account Representative, Erin Flynt worked on the project with KevinRigdon, Contract Manager and Justin Gardner, Project Manager with Hotel & Restaurant Supply, Meridian, Mississippi. Michael Fisher, Principal of Fisher & Associates, Inc., Memphis, Tennessee was the original designer on the project. The Mill Conference Center building is owned by Mississippi State University and the kitchen space is also used by the conference center hotel, the Courtyard by Marriott.
